The Norwood Cooperative Nursery School

The Norwood Cooperative Nursery School, Inc. offers a child-centered, teacher-guided preschool experience. At NCNS, children are provided with ample opportunity to learn through play. Play is a medium through which children learn about themselves and the world around them. We define classrooms as communities where children are provided with concrete learning materials and activities relevant to their own lives.

The Norwood Cooperative Nursery School, Inc. is a nonprofit, nonsectarian preschool serving Norwood and surrounding communities. The school was established in 1962, incorporated in 1978 under Massachusetts State Law and gained tax-exempt status in 1980. NCNS is licensed in Massachusetts by the Department of Early Education and Care.

Our school is located at 24 Berwick Street in Norwood, adjacent to Berwick Park, occupying the lower level of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church since 1983.

Norwood Cooperative Nursery School’s Philosophy

Learning through play at NCNS Norwood, MA

The philosophy of our preschool program begins with the recognition that each child is a unique person, developing at his/her own pace toward the fulfillment of his/her own promise and abilities. The environment is critical in providing a safe, yet challenging, space for the child to experience positive growth in all facets of development, including social, physical, emotional and intellectual. Our preschool promises to guide each child through the developmental stages, honoring interests and abilities along the way while recognizing children’s unique learning styles and applauding each child’s special gifts. No two children will chart the same course!

Parent Involvement is Key!

A cooperative means working together to benefit all; therefore parental involvement is an essential part of our program. Parents enrich the school program by assisting in the classrooms and contributing hobbies, ideas, talents, and customs. Parents also help outside the classroom by serving on the Board of Directors and by participating in fundraising events or on a committee. The children love to share their school with their parents. The combination of a child-centered program with highly-qualified and dedicated teachers and parent participation has contributed to the warm and caring environment of our school.

Our Staff

Our teachers have been carefully selected to meet the high standards set by our school. With many years of classroom experience, most hold degrees in Early Childhood Education. We are also fortunate to have teachers on staff with long tenure at the school.

Most of our teachers have also sent their own children to the school and have experience from a parent perspective as well. The staff values parent involvement as a way to be more effective and they work in partnership with our parents.

Shauna Parkinson, Director

Shauna joined the staff in 2013 teaching in the three year old classroom, and is now the Director as well as a teacher in the 3 year old program. Shauna is also a past parent of the school. Previously she taught elementary school in Westwood. Shauna lives in Norwood with her husband Rick and two children, Nick and Ally.

Our History

Norwood Cooperative Nursery School is one of the longest running nursery schools in Norwood. It was founded in 1962 by a small group of parents with a desire to provide a caring and exciting first school experience for children by establishing a cooperative relationship with dedicated teachers and committed loving parents. NCNS has been at its current location since 1984 in the lower level of the Emmanuel Luther n Church opposite the picturesque Chapel Street Park and is convenient to the suburban communities of Westwood, Walpole, Dedham and Medfield.

The Carol Lockwood Memorial Climbing Structure

The climbing structure in the 3-year-old classroom was dedicated to the memory of Carol Lockwood, a former parent and Board member in the earliest years of NCNS, on Sunday, January 25th 2004. All of us at NCNS feel privileged to honor Carol in this very special way. Carol was very dedicated to the school and her early vision of the “cooperative” nature of the school became the model that we are still using today. The plaque, which is mounted on the structure, remembers Carol as “founding parent, wise mentor, and true friend of children and the Norwood Cooperative Nursery School”.
